Can I put Mod Podge on drumsticks?

I painted my friend drumsticks for his birthday (Vic Firth Buddy Rich, I stealthily found out, hehe...) and wanted to know if it would be possible to put Mod Podge over them to protect the painting. Would that affect the grip or the drumsticks or make them unable to be played with in any way? I play the flute, not the drums, so unfortunately, I don't know any better. lol.
