I have a freckle that grew in size. Could it be melanoma?

it's not raised, it's oval shaped, dark brown but all the same color. Basically it doesn't have ANY characteristic of a cancerous mole, EXCEPT that it grew a lot over the years. It started out as a tiny dot and now it's a little smaller than the size of a pencil eraser.
