Is manhattan so beautiful , easygoing and friendly as it seems on "friends" or " and the city"?

Manhattan is beautiful from certain vantage points but most of it is dirty, smoggy and full of vagrants. There is a lot to be said for visiting NYC but it is definitely not easy-going or friendly. It is a very intense, fast-paced and violent city.
