I would check into the local/state legal status before doing anything. In some states in the US you can put a mechanics lien on the car, which by law gives you legal ownership of the vehicle until your invoice is paid or other agreement made with the purchaser. If not done within a set amount of time you would be allowed to sell the vehicle for the amount owed.
